Can my child have a custom mouthguard if they have mixed dentition and loose/erupting teeth?
Certainly! A custom mouthguard is the ideal choice for protecting your teeth at any stage of dentition. However, if your child has a mix of both baby and adult teeth, it is important to note that as their mouth continues to develop, the mouthguard may not maintain a perfect fit for long and will require more frequent replacement. To ensure optimal protection and comfort, we recommend getting fitted for a new junior mouthguard every 6 to 12 months, depending on what changes are occurring during dental development. In some cases, we can accommodate the eruption of new teeth during the fabrication process, extending the lifespan of the mouthguard.
Can I get a custom mouthguard if I'm undergoing orthodontic treatment? (Braces or Invisalign)
Absolutely! In fact, wearing a mouthguard during orthodontic treatment is equally, if not more important as the appliance additionally serves to protect any hardware that's glued on to your teeth. In instances where a guard is not worn, damage to orthodontic fixtures upon impact can often lead to more severe damage to your oral structures. One important thing to note is that as your teeth shift throughout treatment, the mouthguard may not maintain a perfect fit and will need more regular replacing. To ensure the best protection and comfort, we recommend getting fitted for a new mouthguard every 6 to 12 months - subject to the degree of orthodontic change.
How do I look after my custom mouthguard at home?
To care for your ONYA Mouthguard, clean it after each use with warm water (not hot!), mild detergent, and a soft toothbrush. Allow it to air dry before storing it in a cool place, away from heat, in the provided case. Avoid biting down on your mouthguard when not in use, keep it away from any pets (especially dogs!), and inspect it regularly for wear or damage. Depending on your frequency of use, use Polident "Retainer & Mouthguard" cleaning tablets when necessary. Proper care helps to extend the lifespan of your mouthguard and maintain its effectiveness.
How do I identify my custom mouthguard?
Every ONYA Mouthguard comes with "Your initial. Your last name" (eg. J. Smith) inscribed on the inside - making it easily identifiable if it's ever misplaced. If you'd prefer to have a phone number written instead, please let us know by simply writing it in the notes section at checkout. Alternatively, stand out from the crowd and make your mouthguard completely your own by personalising it to the max with custom colour, design, logo, and name options. What is your refund and return policy?
Custom mouthguards can take a few weeks to get used to, especially if it's your first one, but we're confident there won't be any problems. In the unlikely event that you're not 100% satisfied with your ONYA Mouthguard after trying it for one week, we will adjust it and/or replace it free of charge to improve any fitting issues. If you're still not happy, we provide hassle-free refunds and returns. Get in touch via our Contact page to start the process.
* Please note we cannot exchange/refund/return a mouthguard due to a change of mind in customisation choices made (ie. colours, designs, logos, names).
What payment options are available?
We currently have two convenient payment options available at the checkout once you're ready to order your ONYA Mouthguard.
1. Bank Transfer: Electronically deposit the full amount or gap payment (after your health fund claim has been successfully processed - we will notify you of this via email) using the details provided at checkout.
2. Pay On The Day: Bring along your cards and we can process health fund claims and EFTPOS payments on the day. Cash payments are also accepted.
Can I claim a health fund rebate for my custom mouthguard?
Yes! Most health funds include custom mouthguards in their coverage plans, with rebates typically ranging anywhere from 50% to 100%. Please review your insurance policy or contact your provider directly (quote item no. 151) before making a payment to confirm how much they will cover. Alternatively, if you submit your health fund member number along with your RSVP, we can check this for you and let you know via email how much you will be out of pocket.
How are custom mouthguards superior to store-bought?
Custom mouthguards are beyond comparison to store-bought or "boil and bite" options due to their perfect, personalised fit which offers enhanced comfort, better protection, and greater durability. They are tailored to your unique dental structure, ensuring maximum effectiveness in absorbing impact and reducing injury risk. In contrast, store-bought mouthguards often have a generic fit, less protection, and may be uncomfortable and/or disruptive during use.
